Lizard Island National Park
Park Island national park with coral reefs and beaches
Part of the Great Barrier Reef, Lizard Island National Park offers white beaches, coral-fringed reefs, hiking to Cook’s Lookout, snorkeling, diving and an on-site research station.
Lizard Island National Park is a protected group of islands on the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland, Australia. The park conserves island beaches, vegetated dunes and adjacent reef habitat.
Snorkelling and diving on nearby coral reefs, short coastal walks and beach swimming are the main attractions. Several lookouts provide panoramic reef and island views; reef sites lie within easy boat range of the island shore.
The park is managed as part of Australia’s wider Great Barrier Reef protection framework and is remote compared with mainland parks. It has a small permanent settlement that supports visitor services and marine research activity.
The island group sits on the Great Barrier Reef off northeast Queensland, north of the state’s major coastal centres. Access is by boat or small aircraft from the Queensland coast.
- Access: Reached only by private boat or scheduled light-aircraft services; there is a small island airstrip and no road connection to the mainland.
- Marine protection: Part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, offering direct access to coral reef snorkelling and diving.
