Little Barrier Island, known in Māori as Hauturu-o-Toi, is an island nature reserve in the Hauraki Gulf off the north-east coast of New Zealand’s North Island. It is administered for conservation and scientific purposes and is renowned for native wildlife.

The island is managed to protect native bird and plant species and is free of most introduced mammalian predators; conservation work and scientific research are primary activities. There are no regular tourist facilities and public access is tightly controlled.

Human use has been primarily conservation-oriented since the island’s formal protection, with restoration and species-recovery programs run by New Zealand authorities. Limited permitted visits support research and approved conservation projects.

Little Barrier lies offshore in the Hauraki Gulf, northeast of Auckland, separated from the mainland by open coastal waters and positioned among other islands of the gulf.

  • Access restrictions: The island is protected as a nature reserve and scientific sanctuary; landing is restricted and generally requires permits from New Zealand conservation authorities.
