Lisbon Baixa
Area Historic downtown Lisbon district with Pombaline grid
Lisbon’s Baixa neighborhood, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, features Praça do Comércio, Rua Augusta’s pedestrian arcades, Pombaline grid streets, cafés and tram connections to the rest of the city.
Lisbon Baixa is the central lower-town district of Lisbon, Portugal, rebuilt on a regular grid after the 1755 earthquake and widely associated with Pombaline architecture. It forms the commercial and civic heart of the city along the Tagus riverfront.
The district includes major public spaces and thoroughfares such as Praça do Comércio, the pedestrian Rua Augusta and Rossio, with shops, cafés, and historic façades dating to the 18th and 19th centuries. The area is intensely visited for walking, shopping and sightseeing and functions as a main connection between the riverside and higher neighbourhoods.
The Baixa was rebuilt under the direction of the Marquis of Pombal in the decade after the 1755 earthquake, introducing earthquake-resistant construction methods and the grid street layout that define the district today. Several buildings and streets preserve the characteristic Pombaline structural and decorative features.
Situated directly inland from the Tagus river, Baixa lies between the Alfama and Chiado neighbourhoods in central Lisbon and is immediately accessible from the riverfront and the city’s principal transport hubs.
- Best viewpoint: The Rua Augusta Arch on the pedestrian axis provides a raised viewing platform with direct views over Praça do Comércio and the Tagus River.
- Layout note: Much of the district follows a Pombaline grid plan dating from the mid-18th century, making it easy to navigate on foot between major squares and streets.
What to See #
- Praça do Comércio: A large riverside square on the Tagus rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake; it provides wide open views onto the river and is framed by Pombaline buildings.
- Rua Augusta: A pedestrianised street that links Praça do Comércio to Rossio and is lined with shops, cafés and the Rua Augusta Arch at its river end.
- Rossio (Praça de D. Pedro IV): A historic city square with theatres, cafés and a distinctive wave-patterned pavement that forms a major transport and social hub for the Baixa district.
