Liptovská Mara is an artificial reservoir on the Váh River in northern Slovakia’s Liptov region, within the Žilina administrative area. It was created in the 20th century as a flood-control and hydropower reservoir and is used for recreation.
The reservoir’s open water and beaches attract boating, swimming and other water sports in season, while the surrounding shorelines provide cycle and walking routes. Small settlements and amenities line parts of the shore, supporting seasonal tourism.
Construction of the dam and reservoir took place in the 20th century to regulate the Váh River for flood control and electricity generation, and the impoundment altered local settlement patterns and landscapes when it filled.
The reservoir lies near the town of Liptovský Mikuláš in northern Slovakia, in a valley setting with mountain views to the north toward the High Tatras range.

How to Get to Liptovská Mara #
From the nearby town of Liptovský Mikuláš the reservoir is a short drive: about 3-5 km from the town centre along local roads (roughly 10-15 minutes by car). Regional buses from larger centres such as Žilina and Ružomberok serve Liptovský Mikuláš; from the town bus stops it’s typically a 10-20 minute walk to popular shore access points of Liptovská Mara.

- Visit between late spring and early autumn for boating, windsurfing and to enjoy the reservoir's recreational facilities when services are operating at full capacity.
- Approach from Liptovský Mikuláš or nearby towns and use the main dam viewpoint for the best panoramic views of the lake and surrounding valleys.
- Time a visit with lower water levels or local outings - submerged village remains and shorelines exposed at lower levels are a historical feature that many casual visitors miss.
