Linderhof Palace is a small royal villa near Ettal in Bavaria built for King Ludwig II of Bavaria in the late 19th century and is the smallest of his palaces. It is noted for its ornate interior, formal French-style gardens and the artificial Venus Grotto on the grounds.

The main attraction is the elaborately decorated palace rooms, arranged and furnished in a historicist style that reflects Ludwig II’s interest in French royal architecture. Gardens include terraces, a cascade and ornamental parterres laid out below the palace, offering framed views back to the building and the surrounding Alps.

Commissioned and overseen by King Ludwig II during the late 1800s, Linderhof was one of several projects intended to recreate aspects of Baroque royal courts. It remained the only one of his major palaces that he lived to complete and use.

The palace sits in the Ammergau Alps region of Bavaria, within easy drive of the small towns of Ettal and Oberammergau and reachable from Munich by road.

  • Visitor access: The palace is reached from the nearby villages of Ettal and Oberammergau, and tours of the interior are restricted to guided visits that operate on a schedule.

What to See #

  • Main palace: The palace proper contains richly decorated state rooms and a formal small-scale Hall of Mirrors styled after French royal residences of the 18th century.
  • Venus Grotto: An artificial grotto known as the Venus Grotto is an engineered cave space used for musical and theatrical entertainments and is part of the visitor route.
  • Formal gardens and cascade: Extensive formal gardens include terraces, a cascade and ornamental features arranged in a landscaped setting below the palace.
