Linderhof Palace is a small royal villa near Ettal in Bavaria built for King Ludwig II of Bavaria in the late 19th century and is the smallest of his palaces. It is noted for its ornate interior, formal French-style gardens and the artificial Venus Grotto on the grounds.
The main attraction is the elaborately decorated palace rooms, arranged and furnished in a historicist style that reflects Ludwig II’s interest in French royal architecture. Gardens include terraces, a cascade and ornamental parterres laid out below the palace, offering framed views back to the building and the surrounding Alps.
Commissioned and overseen by King Ludwig II during the late 1800s, Linderhof was one of several projects intended to recreate aspects of Baroque royal courts. It remained the only one of his major palaces that he lived to complete and use.
The palace sits in the Ammergau Alps region of Bavaria, within easy drive of the small towns of Ettal and Oberammergau and reachable from Munich by road.

How to Get to Linderhof Palace #
Linderhof Palace is near Ettal / Oberammergau in southern Bavaria. By car it is about 100-110 km southwest of Munich; the usual driving route is A95 out of Munich toward Garmisch-Partenkirchen and then regional roads (B‑routes) toward Ettal and Oberammergau - expect roughly a 1.5‑hour drive in normal conditions.
By public transport take a regional train from Munich toward Garmisch-Partenkirchen (or to a nearby station), then a regional bus or taxi for the final leg to Ettal/Linderhof (the palace has a visitor car park and the palace is a short walk from the car park).
Tips for Visiting Linderhof Palace #
- Arrive early or late in the day to avoid the coach-tour rush; the palace interior is visited on timed tours, so early arrival increases your chance of a less crowded guided visit.
- Buy tickets at the palace ticket office and check the day's guided-tour times on arrival-brief gaps between tours are the best time to explore the exterior and park without large groups.
- Don't skip the surrounding park: the Venusgrotte, Moorish Kiosk and ornamental water features are part of the designed visitor experience and are easily missed if you only focus on the palace interior.
