How to Get to Limoux#
Limoux is easiest reached via Carcassonne airport or by regional rail from Toulouse/Carcassonne. The town itself is compact; most visitors arrive by car, train or an occasional regional coach.
Carcassonne-Salvaza (CCF): Carcassonne is the closest small airport to Limoux (≈25-35 km). From the airport you can take a taxi to Limoux in about 30-40 minutes (typical fares roughly €30-€50) or rent a car at the terminal.
Toulouse-Blagnac (TLS): Toulouse is the nearest major international airport (≈100 km). From Toulouse-Matabiau take a TER train to Carcassonne (about 1h10), then the regional train to Limoux (≈25-30 minutes). A direct taxi from Toulouse airport to Limoux takes about 1h15-1h30 and costs substantially more than travelling by rail.
Train: Limoux has a small SNCF station on the Carcassonne-Quillan line; TER Occitanie runs Carcassonne ↔ Limoux in roughly 25-35 minutes (single fares are low - typically a few euros). Carcassonne main station connects to Toulouse and other regional hubs.
Bus: Région buses and TER replacement coaches connect Limoux with surrounding towns and Carcassonne; travel times vary (30-60 minutes depending on origin) and fares are inexpensive. Local taxis and on-demand transfers fill gaps where schedules are sparse.
How to Get Around Limoux#
Limoux is best navigated by a mix of regional train/bus and car - trains are useful for short hops to Carcassonne while a rental car opens up the surrounding countryside. Inside town, walking and occasional taxis work well.
- Train (TER Occitanie) (€3-€10) - The local TER line links Limoux with Carcassonne and the rest of Occitanie. Trains are infrequent but reliable; check SNCF/TER Occitanie timetables in advance. Good option when connecting from Toulouse or Carcassonne.
- Regional bus (€2-€8) - Regional coaches connect Limoux with smaller villages and with Carcassonne. Services can be infrequent outside peak times; bring local timetables. Fares are low but expect limited weekend service.
- Taxi / Private transfer (€30-€120) - Taxis are practical for door-to-door transfers from Carcassonne or Toulouse airports, and useful for late arrivals. Expect higher fares than buses but more reliable scheduling.
- Car rental (€30+/day) - Renting a car gives the most flexibility for exploring the Limoux region (vineyards, Cathar country). Roads are straightforward and parking in town is generally easy outside festival days.
- Bicycle (€8-€20/day) - Limoux and its immediate countryside are pleasant to cycle, with quiet country roads and vineyards nearby. Hire options are limited - bring or rent in larger towns if you plan longer rides.
- Walking - Limoux is compact and very walkable; the old town and riverside are best explored on foot.
