Lifou Island
Island Coral island in Loyalty Islands with Kanak villages
An island in the Loyalty Islands (New Caledonia) known for coral-reef snorkeling and diving, reef-fringed beaches, limestone cliffs and Kanak villages where local markets and customary crafts are visible.
Lifou is the largest of the Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia and is a raised coral island characterized by limestone cliffs, sandy bays and interior karst features. It is part of the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia and retains strong Kanak cultural presence.
The island’s coastline includes broad sandy beaches, fringing reef suitable for snorkeling and dive sites, and striking cliff-and-cave formations. Small coastal villages and the main administrative centre of Wé provide ferry and air connections and basic visitor services.
Lifou has been inhabited by Kanak communities for centuries and today combines traditional village life with small-scale agriculture, artisanal fishing and an emerging visitor sector oriented to beaches and cultural tourism.
Geographically Lifou lies east of New Caledonia’s main island (Grande Terre) in the South Pacific; it is the principal island of the Loyalty group and the local transport hub for the province.
- Island type and status: Largest of the Loyalty Islands and part of New Caledonia, the island is a raised coral island rather than volcanic highland.
- Access: Served by regular domestic flights from Nouméa and by inter-island ferries, with the main airfield adjacent to Wé.
What to See #
- Wé (main town): Wé, the island's main town and administrative centre, serves as the port and local commercial hub for Lifou.
- Luengöni Beach: Luengöni Beach and nearby bays are known for sandy shores, calm water and snorkeling access to coral reefs.
- Cliffs and cave sites: Coastal cliffs and subterranean caves on the lee side of the island that are locally significant for geology and traditional stories, and accessible by guided local paths.
