Fragmentary Roman-era library on Athens’ Roman Agora with surviving inscriptions and masonry; tourists visit as part of the Agora archaeological circuit.
The Library of Pantainos is an ancient Roman-era library in Athens located on the Roman Agora, close to the Tower of the Winds. The structure was founded by a donor named Pantainos and served as a public library in the Roman period.
Archaeological remains include masonry fragments and inscriptions that record the donor’s name and the building’s function; these remains are visible at the Roman Agora archaeological site. The site is compact and typically visited together with the Agora and nearby classical monuments.
Built in the Roman Imperial period, the library reflects civic patronage and the spread of public literary institutions in the city under Roman rule. Excavations in the 20th century uncovered the building’s foundations and epigraphic evidence that link it to its founder.
The library stands on the Roman Agora in central Athens, adjacent to other Roman and medieval monuments and within walking distance of the Acropolis and the modern city centre.
