Levoča, Spišský Hrad and the Associated Cultural Monuments
Historical Site Historic Slovak town and large Gothic hilltop castle
Levoča and Spišský Hrad preserve a medieval town, the 14th-century wooden altar by Master Paul and one of Central Europe’s largest castle ruins. Tourists visit for town squares, Gothic churches and hiking to Spiš Castle.
Levoča, Spišský hrad and the Associated Cultural Monuments is a serial heritage property in eastern Slovakia combining a fortified castle, a medieval town and several ecclesiastical sites that together illustrate medieval urban, religious and military organisation.
The expansive hilltop Spiš Castle, the market-centred medieval town of Levoča with its St. James Church and late-Gothic carved wooden altar by Master Paul, and smaller ecclesiastical settlements such as Spišská Kapitula and the decorated church at Žehra. The ensemble preserves town planning, monumental architecture and church art spanning the medieval period.
The complex developed from the 12th century as a regional administrative, religious and trade centre; the castle expanded over centuries and much of it fell into ruin after later conflicts and fires, while the town retained its medieval street plan and civic buildings. The cluster was recognised for its combined historical value and inscribed as a World Heritage property.
The sites are located in the Prešov Region of northeastern Slovakia, on a limestone plateau and adjacent lowlands; they lie inland from the Carpathian foothills and are part of a landscape of rolling hills, villages and agricultural land.
- Composite property: The property groups together a fortified hilltop castle, a medieval town, an episcopal settlement and rural churches, each illustrating different aspects of regional political and religious power in the Middle Ages.
