Levanzo is the smallest of the Aegadian (Egadi) Islands off the west coast of Sicily, Italy, and is a sparsely populated island known for its coastal scenery and archaeological sites.
The island’s principal attraction is the Grotta del Genovese, a coastal cave with Paleolithic and Neolithic rock paintings and engravings. Visitors also use the island for swimming, snorkeling and short boat trips around its clear Mediterranean waters.
Archaeological evidence shows human use of the island since prehistoric times, and the island has long been occupied by small fishing and maritime communities.
Levanzo lies off western Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea, part of the Aegadian archipelago and reachable by ferry from Trapani and nearby islands.

How to Get to Levanzo #
Levanzo (island in the Egadi Islands) is reached by ferry or hydrofoil from Trapani on Sicily’s west coast; operators run regular crossings (hydrofoils are faster, conventional ferries take longer). From Trapani harbour catch a direct boat to Levanzo (arrival at the small Cala Dogana/port); the main village is a short walk from the landing. By road, Trapani is about 100 km (roughly 1.5 hours) west of Palermo on the A29.
Tips for Visiting Levanzo #
- Book your ferry or hydrofoil from Trapani (and return) in advance during high season - services to Levanzo are limited and popular departure times fill quickly.
- Plan to explore on foot or by rented bicycle: the island is small and vehicle access is minimal, so schedule activities around ferry times and limited on-island services (shops and restaurants may close early).
- Visit the Grotta del Genovese earlier in the day when guided visits or on-site access are less crowded, and confirm opening/entry arrangements locally since access can be managed to protect the prehistoric paintings.
Best Time to Visit Levanzo #
Best visited late spring through early autumn (May-September) for warm weather, swimming and reliable ferry services; winters are quiet with reduced services.
