Lescar Cathedral

Lescar Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Lescar) is a former Roman Catholic cathedral in Lescar, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, principally built in the 12th century. It served as the seat of the bishops of Lescar and is noted for its Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements and preserved medieval stonework.

The building’s highlights include the sculpted west façade, a Romanesque nave with later Gothic vaulting and surviving medieval funerary monuments and fresco fragments. The interior and episcopal areas illustrate successive construction phases from the 12th to the late medieval period and are the main reasons visitors come.

The cathedral was established as the seat of a medieval bishopric and remained a functioning cathedral until the upheavals of the French Revolution, after which the diocese was suppressed and its properties secularized. Subsequent conservation and restoration work in the 19th and 20th centuries focused on stabilizing the structure and revealing medieval decoration.

The cathedral sits in the town of Lescar, about 6 km northwest of the city of Pau, on a low hill overlooking the surrounding Béarn plain and agricultural land.

• Crypt and episcopal area: A crypt and episcopal area beneath the church contain burials and liturgical spaces associated with the former bishopric; parts of the interior preserve medieval fresco fragments and stone funerary monuments.
