Lerna is an archaeological and mythic site in the Argolid region of the Peloponnese, Greece, noted for Bronze Age remains and its link in Greek myth to the Lernaean Hydra. The site contains multi-period occupation levels from the Neolithic through the Bronze Age.

Excavated remains include domestic and public-building foundations, with the best-known structure called the House of the Tiles from the Early Helladic II period. Surface remains and trenches show successive phases of settlement and rebuilding.

Lerna was inhabited across prehistoric and early historic periods, with clear archaeological evidence for substantial Early Bronze Age architecture and later activity. Historical and literary tradition also attached mythic significance to the area.

The site is located in the Argolid plain in the eastern Peloponnese, near the modern settlements of the Argos-Nafplio area and within commuting distance of those towns.

Tips for Visiting Lerna #

  • Visit early in the morning to avoid heat and mosquitoes and to get the best light for viewing the exposed ruins - the archaeological remains are small and far less crowded than nearby major sites.
  • Combine Lerna with nearby Argolid sites (for example Mycenae or local museums) on the same day; Lerna is a short, typically quick stop so pairing it with one larger site makes for a fuller outing.
  • Expect a brief visit: the visible ruins are limited, so plan roughly 30-60 minutes on site and check opening times at local archaeological authorities before you travel.
