The Leogang Mountains are a limestone range in the state of Salzburg, Austria, surrounding the market town of Leogang and forming part of the Northern Limestone Alps. The range is a prominent recreation area for both winter skiing and summer mountain biking.
The area includes lift-served slopes, marked hiking trails and an internationally known downhill bike park with purpose-built tracks and chairlift access. Outdoor recreation infrastructure is extensive and geared to all-season tourism.
Geologically the ridges and cliffs are typical of the Northern Limestone Alps, with steep faces, karst features and alpine pastures. Local infrastructure developed in the 20th century to support ski tourism and, more recently, mountain biking.
The range lies in western Salzburg state, immediately surrounding the town of Leogang and near Saalfelden and the larger Zell am See region.
- Mountain bike events: The Bikepark Leogang regularly hosts UCI Mountain Bike World Cup events and is one of the principal downhill venues in the Alps.
- Ski area connection: The area forms part of the wider Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang ski and recreation region, with lift connections between neighbouring resorts in winter and summer.
What to See #
- Bikepark Leogang: A world-class downhill and cross-country destination with multiple lift-served trailheads and a purpose-built Bikepark that hosts international competition.
- Asitz / Asitzbahn: A high mountain accessed by the Asitzbahn cable car which provides summer hiking and winter skiing access and connects to trails on the Asitz massif.
Tips for Visiting Leogang Mountains #
- Use the Asitz/Leogang lift (Asitzbahn) from the village to access the main hiking and mountain‑bike trails quickly - the lift saves long climbs and is the gateway to the popular summit paths and Bikepark Leogang.
- If you want quieter trails, head out early on a weekday; weekends and summer evenings draw downhill bikers and day‑trip crowds, so mornings give clearer trails and parking.
- If you're mountain‑biking, buy lift/bike‑park passes in advance when possible and plan to use the gondola as your shuttle - it's the quickest way to get repeated runs without long road transfers.
