Leipzig Central Station
Monument Major Saxony railway hub and historic station building
A major rail hub in Saxony with a vast concourse, extensive regional and long‑distance services and shops; travelers use it as the gateway to Leipzig’s museums, restaurants and nightlife.
Leipzig Central Station (Leipzig Hauptbahnhof) is the main railway station in Leipzig, Saxony, and one of the largest station buildings in Europe by floor area. The current monumental station building was completed and opened in 1915.
The station combines a large historic concourse with integrated retail and passenger services and is served by long-distance, regional and S-Bahn trains. The site functions both as a transport hub and a central shopping and commercial node for the city.
Significant upgrades in the late 20th and early 21st centuries included integration with the Leipzig City Tunnel, which added underground S-Bahn platforms and improved through-running services across the city. The hall and façade are examples of early 20th-century station architecture that have been retained while the interior has been adapted for modern passenger use.
Leipzig Central Station sits on the southern edge of Leipzig’s city center beside the inner Ringstraße, within walking distance of the Hauptmarkt and other central city attractions. It is a primary arrival point for rail travelers to Leipzig and the surrounding region.
- Opening date and scale: The present station building dates from the early 20th century and opened in 1915; it ranks among the largest station buildings in Europe by floor area.

What to See #
- Main concourse and station hall: The main concourse and historic station hall form the station's architectural heart and contain retail spaces and accesses to tram and bus stops on the surface level.
- City Tunnel S-Bahn platforms: Underground S-Bahn platforms that connect to the Leipzig City Tunnel and integrate regional and city S-Bahn services; these were added as part of early 21st-century rail upgrades.
- Station shopping arcade: A multi-level shopping and service zone integrated into the station building, containing retail outlets and services for travelers.
How to Get to Leipzig Central Station #
Leipzig Central Station (Leipzig Hauptbahnhof) is Leipzig’s main rail hub on Willy-Brandt-Platz and is served by long‑distance DB ICE/IC services, regional RE/RB trains and the S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland. Several tram stops and bus stops are immediately outside the station, and the city centre (Augustusplatz) is a 5-10 minute walk. By car/from nearby cities: Dresden is roughly 100 km east (about 1-1.5 hours by motorway via A4/A14 depending on route and traffic).
Tips for Visiting Leipzig Central Station #
- Avoid weekday morning and late-afternoon commuter peaks (roughly 07:00-09:00 and 16:00-18:00) if you want to move through platforms and the long shopping arcades more comfortably; midday or early afternoon is far quieter for people arriving just to visit the station.
- Use the tram and S-Bahn stops directly outside the main station to start city connections - these are faster than trying to navigate surface traffic and are convenient for reaching Leipzig's city center landmarks.
- If you need ticketing help or luggage services, head to the large DB service hall in the main concourse rather than relying solely on machines; for photography, the vaulted facade and platforms are best captured in side light late morning.
Best Time to Visit Leipzig Central Station #
