Lechtal Alps
Mountains Alpine subrange in Austria, popular for skiing
A mountain range named for the Lech valley spanning parts of Tyrol and Vorarlberg. The Lechtal Alps attract hikers and climbers in summer and skiers to small resorts, huts and limestone ridges in winter.
The Lechtal Alps are a subrange of the Northern Limestone Alps located mainly in Tyrol in western Austria. The range is characterised by rugged limestone peaks, high alpine pastures and glacially carved valleys.
Alpine hikers, climbers and ski tourers use the Lechtal Alps for routes ranging from high alpine summits to valley trails; the area offers via ferrata routes and classic alpine ascents. Mountain huts and village bases in the surrounding valleys support multi-day touring.
The mountains were shaped by alpine uplift and Pleistocene glaciation; limestone geology produces steep escarpments and karst features. The range has long been used for summer grazing and alpine pasture farming.
Geographically the Lechtal Alps lie in western Austria, running east-west north of the main Alpine crest and encompassing the upper Lech River valley and adjacent ridgelines.
- High point: The highest point, Parseierspitze, rises to 3,036 metres and is a well-known objective for experienced alpinists.
- Geology: Part of the Northern Limestone Alps, characterised by steep limestone ridges, narrow valleys and glacial cirques.
What to See #
- Parseierspitze: The Parseierspitze, the highest peak in the range, reaching 3,036 metres and forming a prominent limestone summit for mountaineers and hikers.
- Lech valley: The Lech valley running along the southern side of the range, which provides access routes, mountain villages and valleys used as bases for alpine excursions.
How to Get to Lechtal Alps #
The Lechtal Alps (Tyrol/region along the Lech valley) are accessed by car via the regional road network from Tyrolean towns and valleys; Innsbruck is the nearest major city with motorway connections to the region. Local access points and mountain villages are reached on secondary alpine roads, and many trailheads and huts are reached on foot from those villages. Public buses connect some valley villages to nearby towns where you can begin hikes.
Tips for Visiting Lechtal Alps #
- Base yourself in one of the Lechtal valley villages (for example Elbigenalp or nearby small towns) and use the Lechtal valley road to reach trailheads-this gives the quickest access to the high alpine meadows and peaks.
- Visit outside the main summer weekend swells-weekdays in late June or early September offer quieter trails and better hut availability; many hikers stick to the main ridge paths, so explore side valleys for solitude.
- Include a stop at one of the alpine huts along lesser‑used routes to experience traditional mountain pastures and avoid crowded panoramic viewpoints that attract day‑trippers.
Best Time to Visit Lechtal Alps #
Choose summer for hiking and alpine scenery, or winter for snow sports-conditions change rapidly with elevation, so plan accordingly.
