Le Thoronet Abbey

Le Thoronet Abbey is a Cistercian monastery in the Var department of Provence, France, founded in the 12th century (roughly mid-1100s). It is celebrated for its austere Romanesque/Cistercian architecture and well-preserved monastic layout.

The complex is valued for its simple stone volumes, tight proportions and the intact grouping of church, cloister and chapter house. The church interior is noted for its acoustics and the use of natural light; the cloister and chapter house are accessible as part of the visitor route.

Built by Cistercian monks in the 12th century, the abbey served as a working monastic community for several centuries before decline and secularisation after the late medieval period and the upheavals of the French Revolution. It was conserved and restored in the 19th and 20th centuries and now operates as a historic monument open to the public.

Le Thoronet Abbey lies inland in Provence, close to the small village of Le Thoronet in the Var region, set among wooded hills typical of the Provencal interior and not far from the Côte d’Azur coast.
