Main image

Le Chasseron is a mountain in the Jura range in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, with a summit at about 1,607 metres above sea level. It is a prominent local peak known for broad panoramic views.

The summit area offers open ridgelines and viewing points from which the Swiss Plateau, Lake Neuchâtel and the high Alps are visible on clear days. Walks to the top are commonly done as day hikes; the terrain and snow conditions also attract ski-touring and snowshoeing in winter.

The mountain has long been used for alpine pasture and recreation rather than as a site of major historic construction. Modern waymarked trails connect the summit with surrounding villages and mountain huts.

  • Elevation: Summit elevation is 1,607 metres above sea level, making it a prominent peak in the Jura for regional views.
  • Activities: Popular for day hikes in summer and ski-touring or snowshoe routes in winter; routes are waymarked from nearby villages.

Tips for Visiting Le Chasseron #

  • Go on a clear morning for the best panoramic views - from the Chasseron you can see the Swiss plateau, Lake Neuchâtel and, on very clear days, the high Alps including Mont Blanc.
  • Start from the less frequented trailheads (for example Les Rasses) to spread out from the busier summit approach and enjoy a quieter ridge walk rather than crowding the main car‑park trail.
  • Don't confine yourself to the summit: most visitors miss the exposed limestone karst formations and the extended ridge paths that give long, uninterrupted views; allow time for the ridge loop rather than a direct up‑and‑down.
