Laxenburg castles

Laxenburg castles are a palace complex and landscaped park in the town of Laxenburg, Lower Austria, historically used as a summer residence by the Habsburgs. The site comprises palace buildings, an artificial lake with an island castle and an extensive English-style landscape park.

The most immediately visible feature is the island castle known as the Franzensburg, set on the park’s main lake, along with the older palace buildings and formal approaches. The park contains walking paths, water features and historic garden elements that are open to the public and used for leisure and cultural events.

The complex was developed over several centuries by the Habsburg family as an imperial retreat and was altered and expanded in different phases, with notable 18th- and 19th-century building campaigns shaping its current appearance. The Franzensburg island castle was constructed in the early 19th century and reflects a historicist, neo-Gothic style popular at that time.

Laxenburg lies just south of Vienna in Lower Austria, within easy driving distance of the city centre and close to the town of Mödling; the park sits on low-lying ground with landscaped lakes and wooded sections forming the local landscape.
