Lauwersmeer
Lake Freshwater lake and national park important for birds
A lake-turned-national park on the Groningen-Friesland border, created after the Lauwers Sea closure; birdwatchers, sailors and windsurfers use its shallow bays, dunes and extensive cycling paths.
Lauwersmeer is a large freshwater lake and nature area in the north of the Netherlands that was created following the engineering closure of a sea inlet. It is managed for conservation and recreation and is recognised for its wetland habitats.
The area is prized for birdwatching, with reedbeds, marshes and open-water habitats attracting migratory and breeding species; observation hides and trails provide public access. Recreational opportunities include boating, cycling and marked walking routes around the lake.
The Lauwers Sea was closed by engineering works in 1969 to create a freshwater body; the site was later designated and developed as a nature area and national park to conserve the new habitats and provide visitor facilities.
Lauwersmeer sits on the border between the provinces of Groningen and Friesland in the north of the Netherlands, with access points and small harbours around the lake.
