Laurie Island
Island South Orkney Island with Antarctic research stations
Laurie Island in the South Orkneys hosts Orcadas, an Argentine scientific station; it appears on polar expedition itineraries for seabird colonies, ice floes and the history of Antarctic research.
Laurie Island is one of the South Orkney Islands in the Southern Ocean, situated off the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula region. It hosts a permanent research presence and is part of the island group administered under the Antarctic Treaty System.
The island is most notable for housing the Orcadas Antarctic Station, an Argentine meteorological and scientific base that has operated on Laurie Island since the early 20th century and is among the earliest established Antarctic research stations. The station is a focal point for meteorological observation and polar research in the South Orkneys.
Laurie Island lies in the northeastern sector of the South Orkney archipelago and is surrounded by sea ice for large parts of the year; the island’s terrain is typical Antarctic rock, ice and coastal cliffs and it is accessed only by ship or research vessel under expedition conditions.
- Historic scientific station: Part of the South Orkney Islands group and home to one of the earliest continuously occupied Antarctic research stations.
What to See #
- Orcadas Antarctic Station: Orcadas Station, an Argentine permanent research base established on the island and operated continuously through most of the 20th and 21st centuries.
How to Get to Laurie Island #
Laurie Island lies in the South Orkney Islands and has no regular public transport. It is reached only by sea as part of Antarctic or sub-Antarctic voyages: access is via ice-strengthened research vessels or expedition cruise ships that call at the South Orkneys. Landings and transfers are arranged by expedition operators or the stations on the island (Orcadas); there are no road links from other continents.
Tips for Visiting Laurie Island #
- Plan any visit for the austral summer (roughly December-February) when expedition landings are possible and weather is least severe; Laurie Island is not a casual day trip and is normally visited only as part of Antarctic cruise itineraries.
- Coordinate landings through a reputable expedition operator and ask in advance whether a visit to Orcadas Station (the historic Argentine research station on Laurie Island) can be included-the station is the island's main human-interest site and is often overlooked.
- Choose smaller-ship itineraries and request early or late zodiac landing slots where possible; landings are managed by tour leaders so timing/landing-group choice is the easiest way to avoid the busiest onshore periods.
Best Time to Visit Laurie Island #
Visit in the austral summer (December-February) when sea access, daylight and research-station activity make visits feasible.
