Archaeological Site Ancient Dorian city ruins overlooking Mirabello Bay
Near Agios Nikolaos, the Dorian city of Lato sits on a limestone ridge; visitors study its Hellenistic ruins, stone houses and watch over Mirabello Bay from compact terraces.
Lato is an ancient Dorian city-state on eastern Crete, an archaeological site featuring two acropoleis on adjacent hilltops and extensive remains of domestic and public architecture. It was a significant local polis in the archaic and classical periods.
Visitors encounter stone city walls, house foundations, temples and paved streets laid out on the hills, and the site provides elevated views over the surrounding valley and Mirabello Bay. Paths link the main areas and signage explains the visible remains.
The city was inhabited from the archaic through the Hellenistic period and was later abandoned as political and settlement patterns changed under Roman rule. Archaeological excavation has documented the layout and principal buildings of the site.
Lato sits above the village of Kritsa in eastern Crete, inland from Mirabello Bay and within easy driving distance of Agios Nikolaos and other towns on the island’s northeast coast.

What to See #
- East and West Acropoleis: The east and west acropoleis occupy two separate hilltops with remains of fortification walls, house foundations and public buildings; the site commands views across Mirabello Bay to the north.
Tips for Visiting Lato #
- Go early in the morning (first hour after opening) or late afternoon to avoid the heat and day‑trip coach crowds; the low sun also brings out the contours of the Dorian walls and gives the best photos of Mirabello Bay.
- Use the small roadside parking/entrance near the village of Kritsa rather than trying to approach from Agios Nikolaos - the path from Kritsa is the most direct and avoids steeper uphill approaches.
- Don't rush past the ramparts: most visitors miss the cisterns, wellheads and the excellent panoramic viewpoints on the western walls that show how the city controlled the bay - allow time to walk the perimeter.
- Combine a visit with nearby Kritsa or the Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos to place the ruins in context and to avoid returning during the midday coach arrivals.
