Lateran Baptistery
Religious Site Historic octagonal baptistery adjacent to Lateran Basilica
Adjacent to Rome’s Lateran Basilica, the octagonal baptistery preserves early Christian mosaics and baptismal architecture; pilgrims and architecture enthusiasts visit for historical liturgy and art.
The Lateran Baptistery (Battistero Lateranense) is the octagonal baptistery adjacent to the Archbasilica of St John Lateran in Rome and is among the oldest surviving baptisteries in the Christian West. Its origins date back to the late 4th century.
An eight-sided masonry structure surrounding a central baptismal font, the baptistery contains decorative stonework and historical liturgical fittings; it is part of the Lateran complex visited by those studying Rome’s early Christian architecture. The building’s plan and furnishings illustrate early Christian baptismal practice.
Established in the late Roman imperial period, the baptistery has been repaired and altered across the medieval and modern eras while retaining its fundamental octagonal layout. It has served as the principal baptistery for the cathedral church of the Bishop of Rome, the Pope, in his capacity as Bishop of the Diocese of Rome.
Sited in the Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano, the baptistery stands immediately beside the Archbasilica of St John Lateran in central Rome.
- Octagonal plan: Built around an eight-sided plan with a central raised baptismal font, reflecting early Christian baptistery design.
- Ecclesiastical role: Functionally connected to the Archbasilica of St John Lateran and historically used for important baptisms in the Roman Church.
