Las Ventas
Monument Historic Madrid bullring and notable Neo-Mudéjar architecture
Madrid’s principal bullring, notable for its Neo‑Mudéjar façade and large seating capacity; attracts spectators for bullfights, guided visits and occasional concerts or events.
Las Ventas (Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas) is Madrid’s principal bullring, located in the Salamanca district. Built in a Neo-Mudéjar style, it is the country’s most prominent modern bullring and the focal point of the Madrid bullfighting season.
The complex centres on the oval sand arena surrounded by tiered seating and also includes a bullfighting museum that displays costumes, posters and artefacts. The ring hosts bullfights during the season and is used for occasional concerts and events outside those dates.
The arena opened in the early 20th century and quickly became the main venue for Spain’s capital city bullfights, shaping modern bullfighting culture in Madrid. Over time it has also accommodated non-bullfighting events and public tours to explain the site’s history and architecture.
Las Ventas is located within Madrid and is well served by public transport; it is visible from surrounding avenues and stands as an architectural landmark in the city’s eastern districts.
- Capacity and status: The building is the principal bullring in Madrid and has a seating capacity of about 23,000, making it one of Spain's largest bullrings.
- Architecture and uses: Architecturally the venue is notable for its Neo-Mudéjar red-brick exterior and decorative tiled details, visible from the surrounding neighbourhood. Tours and occasional concerts occur outside the bullfighting season.
What to See #
- Main arena: The central arena is an oval sand ring used for bullfights and other public spectacles, surrounded by multiple tiers of seating.
- Bullfighting museum: A museum within the complex displays bullfighting costumes, posters and objects related to corrida history in Spain. Tours of the arena and museum are offered to visitors outside performance times.
How to Get to Las Ventas #
Las Ventas bullring is in Madrid on Calle de Alcalá. Take Madrid Metro to the Las Ventas station (served by Line 2 and Line 5); the arena is immediately adjacent to the station and is a 2-3 minute walk from the exits. Numerous EMT buses also stop on Calle de Alcalá near the ring.
Because it is inside the city, driving is possible but limited parking is available; using Metro or bus is the simplest way to visit.
Tips for Visiting Las Ventas #
- Take the guided museum-and-arena tour in the morning on a weekday to access the behind-the-scenes areas and the bullfighting museum with far fewer visitors than on weekends or fight days.
- Arrive via the Ventas metro station (Lines 2 or 5) and use the plaza outside the main entrance to orient yourself - it's the most convenient drop-off for tours and the museum.
- If you want to avoid the large crowd surges, don't visit on big bullfight days; instead go on non-event days when the arena and museum are quieter and easier to explore at your own pace.
