Larochette Castle

Larochette Castle is a ruined medieval castle that crowns a hill above the town of Larochette in the Canton of Echternach in central Luxembourg. The surviving masonry and terraces make it a prominent landmark over the local town and valley.

The site offers short walks between the town and the castle ruins and provides wide views over the surrounding landscape. Key visible elements include the hilltop keep and stretches of curtain wall with accessible paths for visitors.

The castle dates to the medieval period, originating in the 11th to 12th centuries with subsequent alterations during later medieval centuries. Over time it fell into ruin and today remains as an historic ruin rather than a restored fortress.

It stands immediately above the town of Larochette in central Luxembourg, within the Canton of Echternach, and is a short walk from the town centre.

• Access and viewpoint: The ruins sit directly above the town of Larochette and are reached by short footpaths from the town centre, offering panoramic views over the surrounding valley.
• Visitor note: Stone remains are visible year-round; care is needed on uneven paths and in rain as surfaces can be slippery.

What to See #

• Upper ward (high castle): The upper ward on the hilltop containing the remains of the main keep and inner defensive walls; this area provides the clearest views over the town below.
• Lower ward and chapel remains: A lower bailey and terrace areas that once held service buildings and a chapel; these portions are partially ruined but form the approach route from the town.
