Lanzarote
Island Canary Island with volcanic landscapes and Timanfaya park
An eastern Canary Island, Lanzarote is known for Timanfaya’s volcanic fields, César Manrique’s low-profile architecture, La Geria’s vine terraces, surfing beaches and coastal hiking.
Lanzarote is a northeastern Canary Island of volcanic origin administered by Spain and known for its stark volcanic landscapes and strong influence from artist and planner César Manrique. The island’s geology and cultural landmarks make it a distinctive part of the Canary archipelago.
The volcanic scenery of Timanfaya National Park, Manrique-designed attractions such as Jameos del Agua and Mirador del Río, and popular sandy beaches like Playa de Papagayo. The island also features the distinctive vineyard landscapes of La Geria, where vines are planted in semi-circular stone walls on volcanic ash, plus coastal resorts and diving spots.
Major eruptions between 1730 and 1736 produced extensive lava fields and reshaped much of the island, and subsequent settlement adapted to those new landscapes. During the 20th century César Manrique influenced building and tourism policy, promoting low-rise development and integration of art and nature.
Lanzarote sits in the eastern Canary Islands off the northwest coast of Africa and is the easternmost of the main inhabited Canaries. Regular ferry services link it to neighbouring islands, and the island is served by an international airport near the island capital.
- Volcanic history: Much of the island landscape was shaped by major volcanic eruptions between 1730 and 1736; the resulting lava fields define many visitor sites.
- Getting around: Car hire and a vehicle are the most practical ways to explore the island; regular ferries connect Lanzarote to neighbouring islands such as Fuerteventura.
What to See #
- Timanfaya National Park: A protected volcanic landscape in the island's south featuring lava fields, fumaroles and guided geothermal routes.
- Jameos del Agua and César Manrique sites: A cultural and architectural complex created by César Manrique that combines natural caves, gardens and performance spaces.
- La Geria: A wine-producing area on volcanic soils known for low, stone-walled vineyards and white wine varieties.
