Straddling the Argentina-Chile border, Lanín is a snow-capped stratovolcano within Lanín National Park in Neuquén Province; climbers and hikers use marked routes and mountain refuges to access alpine terrain.
Lanín is a conical stratovolcano on the border between Argentina and Chile, prominent in Neuquén Province in Argentina. Its summit reaches about 3,747 metres above sea level and it is the dominant peak within the surrounding national park.
The mountain is visited for mountaineering, skiing on its upper slopes and for the views from its summit cone. Routes are alpine in character and climbs commonly require glacier or snow travel and a multi-day approach from lower forests and lakes.
Lanín is a volcanic edifice formed in the Andes; there are no well-documented historical eruptions in recent recorded history. The peak and surrounding landscape have long been part of local indigenous and later national park use.
The volcano rises from forested Andean foothills within Lanín National Park, on the international boundary between Neuquén Province in Argentina and neighboring regions of Chile.
