Langkofel
Mountain Iconic Dolomite peak (Sassolungo) in South Tyrol
In the Dolomites, Langkofel (Sassolungo) rises above Val Gardena; climbers and hikers tackle via ferrata routes, while winter ski lifts connect to extensive ski terrain.
Langkofel (Italian: Sassolungo) is a prominent dolomitic mountain massif in the Dolomites of northern Italy, located in the Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol region. Its highest crest rises just above 3,100 metres and it is a distinctive landmark above the Val Gardena valley.
The massif is part of the Dolomites formed from Triassic carbonate rocks; it has no human-built origin but has long featured in local mountaineering history since the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Routes and mountain huts were established as climbing and alpine tourism developed in the region.
The peak overlooks Val Gardena in South Tyrol and lies within the central Dolomite groups of northern Italy, accessible from nearby alpine towns and from road passes that cross the region.
- Names: The massif is commonly known in German as Langkofel and in Italian as Sassolungo, reflecting the bilingual South Tyrol region.
- Elevation: The highest summit reaches just over 3,100 metres, making it one of the taller single-massif peaks in the Dolomites.
How to Get to Langkofel #
Langkofel (Sassolungo) is accessed from the Val Gardena valley in the Dolomites. Drive from Bolzano/Bozen into Val Gardena and follow the road to Selva di Val Gardena (Wolkenstein); there are car parks in the village and at the valley stations of the local lifts.
From Selva the Sassolungo massif is reached on foot via marked hiking trails or by using the local cable cars/lifts that start at the village and valley stations; the lifts and trailheads are within a short walk of the village center.
Tips for Visiting Langkofel #
- Start early (or late afternoon for photography) to miss the busiest midday hours on the Dolomite trails and to get the best light on the massif; weather can change rapidly, so check forecasts before setting out.
- Approach the Langkofel massif from the Val Gardena side (Selva/Wolkenstein area) or from Seiser Alm depending on your route; several lift services serve nearby plateaus so using a lift can shorten the hiking approach and turn a long day into a manageable circuit.
- If you plan any via ferrata routes or technical climbs, book a qualified guide unless you have prior experience and the correct equipment; many visitors underestimate the exposure despite the short distances involved.
- Do the Giro del Sassolungo (the circular trail around the massif) outside peak hours to enjoy clearer views and quieter alpine huts-many people rush straight to the base viewpoints and miss the full circuit.
Best Time to Visit Langkofel #
Summer (June-September) is best for hiking and climbing; winter is for skiing but high routes will be snow-covered and require experience.
