Lampedusa
Island Italian island at migration crossroads with sandy beaches
Between Sicily and North Africa, Lampedusa offers warm Mediterranean waters, rocky coves and famed sand at Rabbit Beach. Daytrippers snorkel, dive Atlantic-tinged reefs and sample island seafood in small village ports.
Lampedusa is the largest of the Pelagie Islands in the central Mediterranean and an Italian municipality administratively part of the Sicily region. The island lies between Sicily and North Africa and has a Mediterranean climate.
The coastline includes sandy beaches, rocky headlands and marine habitats; Rabbit Beach (Spiaggia dei Conigli) is internationally known for its fine sand and as a nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Boat trips and snorkeling are common activities around the island.
Historically the island has had maritime and local agricultural activity; in modern times tourism is the main economic driver. Ferry and air services connect Lampedusa to Sicily and the Italian mainland during the tourist season.
Geographically the island sits in open Mediterranean waters, closer to the Tunisian coast than to Sicily, and forms the southernmost part of Italy’s territory.
- Geographic note: The island is Italy's southernmost inhabited point and lies closer to North Africa than to mainland Sicily, which influences its climate and marine biodiversity.
