How to Get to Lakselv#
Lakselv is best reached by flight into Lakselv Banak Airport (LKL) or by longer road/bus transfers from Alta or Tromsø. Air travel is the fastest and most practical option for most visitors.
Lakselv Banak Airport (LKL): Lakselv has its own regional airport (Banak), with flights from Tromsø, Alta and other Norwegian hubs. Flight times are short (typically 30-60 minutes) depending on origin. From Banak the town centre is about a 5-10 minute drive; taxis run from the terminal (approx NOK 150-250) and some hotels offer transfers.
Alta Airport (ALF) / Tromsø (TOS): If flights to Banak are limited you can fly to Alta or Tromsø and continue by a connecting flight or long-distance bus/car. Drive times from Alta are several hours; check seasonal schedules carefully as services vary in winter.
Train: There is no direct railway service to Lakselv - the rail network in northern Norway does not extend that far north.
Bus / Coach: Regional buses connect Lakselv with Alta, Tromsø and other settlements in Finnmark; journeys are long (several hours) but operate regularly during daytime. Local buses and taxis handle shorter local trips; fares vary by distance but expect NOK-level fares for short runs and higher for intercity legs.
How to Get Around Lakselv#
Flying into Banak (LKL) is the fastest and most common way to reach Lakselv; regional buses and car rental cover overland options but journeys are long in the sparsely populated north. Once in town, walking and short taxi rides handle most local movement.
- Domestic flights (Widerøe / Norwegian) (NOK 600-1,800) - Widerøe operates regional flights into Banak (LKL) linking to Tromsø, Alta and other northern hubs. Flights are short and convenient, and are the recommended way to reach Lakselv quickly. Book early in high season and check punctuality in winter where weather can cause disruptions.
- Regional bus / coach (NOK 200-600) - Coaches connect Lakselv with Alta, Tromsø and other towns - expect several hours on the road across sparsely populated terrain. Buses are reliable but infrequent; bring warm clothing and check timetables in advance, especially outside summer.
- Taxi (NOK 150-250 (local)) - Taxis serve the airport and local journeys; a short ride from Banak to Lakselv centre is about 5-10 minutes and typically costs NOK 150-250. For longer cross-regional trips taxis are expensive and not recommended compared with scheduled coaches or renting a car.
- Car rental (NOK 700-1,500/day) - Renting a car gives freedom to explore Finnmark’s wide spaces and is useful if you plan to chase northern lights or visit remote fjords. Drive times between towns are long and winter driving requires experience and winter tires; factor fuel and potential isolation into plans.
- Boat / ferry (seasonal) (Varies) - In some nearby coastal areas, ferries serve local communities seasonally; these can be scenic but are not typically used for direct access to Lakselv. Check local operators and seasonal schedules before relying on maritime links.
- Walking - Lakselv town centre is compact and easy to explore on foot, with short distances between services and the riverfront. In winter expect icy conditions and plan footwear accordingly.
