Lake Vico is a crater lake in northern Lazio, Italy, occupying the caldera of the extinct Vico volcano. It is a well-defined volcanic lake set within wooded hills west of Viterbo.
Visitors encounter a compact lakeshore with walking and cycling trails, chestnut and oak woodlands and small villages. The lake and its rim are used for outdoor recreation such as hiking, birdwatching and seasonal swimming in designated spots.
The caldera formed during volcanic activity in the Quaternary and later filled to form the present lake; the basin has been used for agriculture, forestry and seasonal settlement for centuries. Local communities have long exploited chestnut groves on the surrounding slopes.
Lake Vico sits in the Cimini Hills of Lazio, within Viterbo province, surrounded by low volcanic hills and woodland; the town of Viterbo lies to the east and Rome is to the southeast within a regional driving distance.

How to Get to Lake Vico #
Lake Vico is located in the Cimini Hills in northern Lazio near the towns of Ronciglione and Caprarola (province of Viterbo). From Rome drive north on the A1 (Autostrada) and continue on regional/Provincial roads toward Viterbo and Ronciglione, then follow local signs to the lake-travel time from central Rome is typically around 1-1.5 hours by car. Viterbo has regional rail service and bus links to nearby towns; from those towns a short taxi or local-bus ride reaches the lake and parking areas.
Tips for Visiting Lake Vico #
- Approach Lake Vico from the towns of Ronciglione or Caprarola to reach the main parking and lakeside walks; those villages give the easiest, established access to the shoreline and services.
- Plan for sunrise or late afternoon for calm waters and the best crater reflections; if you have time, hike up to the crater rim (Monte Venere area) for panoramic views over the lake.
- Avoid weekend crowds from Rome by visiting on weekdays and use smaller secondary roads and village piers on the western shore to find quieter viewpoints many visitors skip.
