Lake Tyrrell
Lake Shallow salt lake with expansive salt flats, reflections
Large salt lake in Victoria’s Mallee region, near Sea Lake; flat salt crusts create reflective surfaces sought by photographers at sunrise and sunset and by stargazers.
Lake Tyrrell is a shallow saline lake on the Mallee Plains in north-west Victoria, near the town of Sea Lake. It is an exposed salt pan and shallow water body noted locally for its white salt crust and broad, flat surface.
The landscape produces strong, mirror-like reflections on shallow water and extensive salt crusts that attract photographers, especially at sunrise and sunset. The flatness of the lake also makes it a favored place for night-sky and Milky Way photography when conditions are dry and skies are clear.
Lake Tyrrell is a natural saline basin created by regional drainage and evaporation processes rather than by human construction. Over time the lake has alternated between shallow water and exposed salt flats depending on rainfall and seasonal inflows.
The lake sits in the Mallee region of north-west Victoria, a short drive from the township of Sea Lake. The surrounding landscape is dry plains and low scrub typical of inland Victoria.
- Photography tips: Best light for photography is in the hours around sunrise and sunset when low-angle light enhances the lake's salt crust and shallow reflections.
- Access: Access is from the nearby town of Sea Lake, which is the usual base for visits and short walks to the lake edge.
How to Get to Lake Tyrrell #
By car: Lake Tyrrell is roughly a 45-60 minute drive northwest of Swan Hill (or about 30-40 minutes from Sea Lake). Access is via sealed and unsealed roads off the Calder Highway (A79/C252) - a 2WD vehicle is usually fine in dry conditions, but check local updates after rain. There is a small visitor area and parking on the southern side.
Tips for Visiting Lake Tyrrell #
- Go at dawn or dusk for the mirror effect - midday winds spoil reflections.
- Bring a tripod for long-exposure night shots; the saltpan makes for excellent star reflections.
- Drive slowly on the access roads after rain; they turn to deep mud and 2WD vehicles can get stuck.
Best Time to Visit Lake Tyrrell #
Lake Tyrrell is best for photographers in spring and autumn when temperatures are moderate and winds are often low, producing the lake's famous mirror surface.
