Lake Taupō
Lake Large volcanic caldera lake; New Zealand's biggest freshwater lake
In New Zealand’s North Island, Lake Taupō fills a volcanic caldera; anglers, boating, nearby geothermal attractions and Huka Falls make the town of Taupō a regional base.
Lake Taupō is a large freshwater lake in New Zealand’s central North Island formed within a volcanic caldera. It is the country’s largest lake by surface area and a major recreational and tourist destination.
Sailing, trout fishing, lake cruises and shoreline cycling are prominent visitor activities, and the town of Taupō on the northeastern shore is the main service hub. Nearby attractions include Huka Falls at the lake’s outlet on the Waikato River and walking routes on surrounding volcanic terrain.
The lake was formed by multiple large eruptions of the Taupō volcanic system, the most recent major explosive event being the early centuries of the Common Era; ongoing geothermal activity characterises the wider region. The large caldera and associated deposits are central to the lake’s origin and landscape.
Geographically the lake sits roughly in the middle of New Zealand’s North Island. The nearest regional centres are Napier and Rotorua to the east and north respectively, with State Highway connections and an international airport at nearby Taupō for access.
- Volcanic origin: The lake occupies the caldera of a large volcanic system; the most recent major eruption from the system, the Taupō or Hatepe eruption, occurred around the 3rd century CE and had significant regional effects.
- Recreation seasons: Trout fishing, sailing and boat cruises are year-round activities, while summer months bring the warmest water and busiest visitor season.
What to See #
- Huka Falls: The powerful waterfall on the Waikato River where it flows out of the lake near the town of Taupō, a short drive from the town centre and a major visitor attraction.
- Taupō town: The lakeside town that serves as the main base for accommodation, boating, fishing charters and tours around the lake's northeastern shore.
- Tongariro/Taupō volcanic region: A national park on the lake's western margins that protects geothermal features and ranges that formed within the lake's volcanic caldera system.
