Lake Stechlin

Lake Stechlin (Stechlinsee) is a clear, oligotrophic lake in Brandenburg, Germany, noted for its depth and high water quality. It is set within the Stechlin-Ruppiner Land Nature Park and has been the subject of long-term freshwater research.

The lake and its immediate surroundings support woodland, open water and wetland habitats and are popular with walkers, swimmers and small-boat users. A small village on the shore provides the main access points and modest visitor facilities.

Scientific interest in the lake’s oligotrophic waters has led to the establishment of research facilities that study freshwater ecology and long-term environmental change. The lake has also featured in regional literature and natural-history accounts.

Geographically it lies north of Berlin in Brandenburg within a protected natural park area and is accessed by local roads from nearby towns.
