Lake Skadar
Lake Large karst lake on Montenegro–Albania border, biodiversity hotspot
Lake Skadar, straddling Montenegro and Albania, is known for extensive reed beds, migratory birds, boat tours from Virpazar, freshwater fishing and nearby monasteries set against low karst hills.
Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans, straddling the border between Montenegro and Albania and forming an important wetland and biodiversity area. The lake and surrounding marshes are protected as a national park on the Montenegrin side.
The lake supports extensive reed beds, small islands and river deltas that are prime habitat for waterbirds and other wildlife; boat trips from villages such as Virpazar provide access to birdwatching and waterside scenery. The shoreline contains historic villages, fishing communities and rivers such as the Rijeka Crnojevića that feed the lake.
The lake’s natural and human landscapes have been shaped by seasonal water-level changes, traditional fishing and conservation measures, with the national park status aimed at protecting habitats and promoting sustainable tourism.
Lake Skadar lies south of Montenegro’s central plains and near the capital Podgorica, forming a broad freshwater basin shared with neighbouring Albania.
- Seasonal variation: The lake is shared between Montenegro and Albania and its shoreline and water level vary seasonally, so boat routes and accessible areas change by season.
- Birdwatching tip: Spring and autumn migrations are best for birdwatching; numerous waterfowl and wetland species are visible from hides and boat tours.
What to See #
- Virpazar: Virpazar is the principal lakeside village and visitor hub with boat tours, birdwatching and local hospitality services for lake excursions.
- Rijeka Crnojevića: Rijeka Crnojevića is a historic riverside settlement and traditional boat-launch point on the northern shore, known for scenic river-mouth views.
- Lake Skadar National Park: Lake Skadar National Park covers a large portion of the Montenegrin shore and protects wetlands, islands and reed beds important for wildlife.
