Lake Rotorua, Te Rotorua nui ā Kahumatamomoe, is a large caldera lake in the Bay of Plenty Region on New Zealand’s North Island and lies adjacent to the city of Rotorua. It is one of the better-known volcanic lakes in the country and has significant cultural importance to local iwi (Māori tribes).
The lakeshore is a major visitor area offering boating, trout fishing, lakeside tracks and geothermal attractions in the surrounding district. An island near the middle of the lake is a notable cultural and natural reserve and is a frequent landing destination for guided boat trips.
The lake occupies part of a larger volcanic caldera system formed by past rhyolitic eruptions; geothermal features and hot springs are present in the immediate area rather than across the lake surface itself. Settlement and tourism developed around the lake during the 19th and 20th centuries, with the city of Rotorua providing principal services and visitor facilities.
The lake sits in the central North Island within the Bay of Plenty Region, with the city of Rotorua on its northern and western shores and volcanic high country surrounding the basin.
- Geothermal visibility: Geothermal activity and geyser fields are concentrated on shores around the lake, making autumn and winter popular for visiting because steam features are more visible in cooler air.
