Lake Volcanic New Zealand lake near Tongariro National Park

Lake Rotoaira is a lake on New Zealand’s central North Island located near the volcanic plateau south of Mount Ruapehu and close to Tongariro National Park. It functions in part as a reservoir within the regional hydroelectric infrastructure.
The shoreline and immediate area are used for fishing, camping and as access to high-country recreation; the lake lies near roads that link to other central plateau attractions. Facilities are limited compared with nearby national-park visitor centres.
The lake’s present configuration is linked to 20th-century hydroelectric developments in the central North Island; it is integrated into the Tongariro power scheme. Prior to hydro works the basin existed as a natural lake within the volcanic plateau.
It sits inland on the central North Island between the areas of Lake Taupo and the Rangipo Desert, at high country elevation and within driving distance of the township of Turangi to the northeast.
- Hydro connections: Part of the lake system used in the Tongariro hydroelectric scheme, with associated intake and outlet works nearby.
- Access: Close to State Highway access and the central North Island alpine area, making it a convenient stop en route to nearby volcanic peaks.
