Lake Razelm
Lake Coastal lagoon complex and important Romanian wetland
Part of the Razelm-Sinoe lagoon complex near the Danube Delta, used for fishing and birdlife. Boat tours and Delta excursions operate from nearby coastal towns.
Lake Razelm, also known as Razim, is a coastal lagoon-lake in Tulcea County in Romania and forms part of the Razelm-Sinoe lagoon complex on the northwestern Black Sea coast. It is a shallow, brackish water body integrated into a larger coastal system of lagoons and channels.
The area is significant for fishing, reed harvesting and birdwatching, and it is managed as part of wider Danube Delta and coastal conservation efforts. Fishing villages and small ports are located along its shores.
Historically the lagoon system has evolved through natural and human-influenced changes to the shoreline and connections to the Black Sea, with fisheries and local livelihoods adapting to those changes.
Lake Razelm lies within the Danube Delta and Tulcea County region, inland from the open Black Sea and separated from it by coastal spits and bars.
- Lagoon complex: Part of the Razelm-Sinoe lagoon complex, which is the largest lagoon system on Romania's Black Sea coast and important for birdlife and fisheries.
Tips for Visiting Lake Razelm #
- Visit at dawn for the best birdwatching and soft light over the shallow lagoon complex - Razelm is part of the larger Razim-Sinoe system and is most active for birds early and late in the day.
- Take the short drive to the medieval Enisala fortress for one of the best panoramic viewpoints over Lake Razelm and the surrounding lagoons; it's a simple stop that many boat visitors skip.
- Explore by small boat from Tulcea or nearby fishing villages to reach reed channels and traditional fishing communities - guided boat trips from Tulcea give the easiest access to quieter areas of the lagoon.
