Main image

Lake Pukaki is a large glacial lake in the Mackenzie Basin on New Zealand’s South Island, known for its striking turquoise water and mountain views. It is a prominent scenic stop on routes to Aoraki / Mount Cook.

Wide views across pale-blue water to the Southern Alps and to Aoraki / Mount Cook make the lake a major photography and sightseeing destination; State Highway 8 runs along parts of the lake shore and provides easy viewpoints. The lake is also used for trout fishing, boating and as part of regional hydroelectric infrastructure.

The lake basin was carved by glaciers during the last Ice Age; later 20th-century engineering works integrated the lake into the Waitaki hydroelectric scheme. The area has long been used for pastoral farming and, more recently, tourism.

Lake Pukaki lies in the Mackenzie District of Canterbury on New Zealand’s South Island, between Lake Tekapo to the south and the foothills of the Southern Alps to the west; the town of Twizel is the nearest service centre.

  • Turquoise color: The lake's vivid turquoise color comes from finely ground glacial rock flour suspended in the water and is most vivid on sunny days.
  • Hydroelectric use: Serves as part of the Waitaki hydroelectric scheme; water levels and flows are managed for power generation.

How to Get to Lake Pukaki #

Lake Pukaki lies beside State Highway 8 in New Zealand’s Mackenzie District. The nearest service town is Twizel; from Twizel drive along SH8 toward Mount Cook/Tekapo and you will pass scenic parking spots and lookouts on the lakeshore. Many of the main viewpoints and walking access points are a short walk from roadside parking.

Tips for Visiting Lake Pukaki #

  • Go to Lake Pukaki at sunrise or late afternoon for the best chance of a clear reflection of Aoraki/Mount Cook and to avoid the midday tour‑bus crowds.
  • Park at the main SH8 pullouts and public viewing areas along the lake's western shore (near Twizel) rather than trying to find unofficial access; those pullouts give the most photographed viewpoints.
  • If you want quieter viewpoints, continue north along the western shore toward the smaller Glentanner and Ben Ohau pullouts-many visitors stop only at the main lookout and miss these outlooks and short lakeside walks.
