Lake Prespa
Lake High-altitude lake shared by Balkan countries
Shared by three countries, Lake Prespa sits in a high basin ringed by mountains, reedbeds and small fishing villages. Birdwatching, boat trips and quiet shorelines draw nature-oriented visitors.
Lake Prespa is a highland lake straddling the borders of North Macedonia, Albania and Greece, situated at over 800 m above sea level. It forms a distinct hydrological basin together with adjacent smaller lakes and wetlands and is noted for its biodiversity.
The lake has islands and wetlands that host important bird colonies and archaeological sites; boat trips and low-impact nature visits are common ways to experience the area. The basin is less developed than neighbouring Lake Ohrid and is valued for birdwatching and quiet rural landscapes.
The Prespa basin developed in a tectonic depression and has been important for local communities for centuries, with modern conservation efforts establishing transboundary cooperation to protect habitats and water quality.
Geographically the lake lies south-east of Lake Ohrid on a high plain surrounded by rolling hills and mountains; the nearest larger towns include Resen in North Macedonia and regional centres in neighbouring countries.
- Transboundary wetlands: A transboundary high-altitude lake shared by North Macedonia, Albania and Greece and known for wetlands that support migratory and resident bird species.
- Protected areas: Much of the lake and surrounding wetlands are protected within national park and reserve boundaries in the three countries, supporting conservation and birdwatching.
What to See #
- Golem Grad (Island): Golem Grad, an island in the North Macedonian part of the lake notable for archaeological remains and a large colony of water birds.
How to Get to Lake Prespa #
Lake Prespa (the Prespa region in North Macedonia) is reached via the nearby town of Resen and other local villages. The area is served by regional roads; visitors commonly drive or take regional buses to Resen and then local roads to the lakeshore and villages. From Ohrid and other nearby towns there are regular road connections to the Prespa area; local taxis and minibuses are options for last-mile access.
Tips for Visiting Lake Prespa #
- Plan lake excursions with border rules in mind - Lake Prespa is divided between North Macedonia, Albania and Greece, so any boat trip that approaches the opposite shore may require passports and prior arrangements.
- Visit at dawn for the best birdwatching and quieter waters; Prespa is less developed than Ohrid and early mornings reveal wetland wildlife and calm photographic conditions that day-trippers often miss.
- Explore small lakeside villages and their local eateries - many visitors stick to main access points, while quiet bays and local tavernas on the North Macedonian shore offer a more peaceful lakeside experience.
Best Time to Visit Lake Prespa #
Late spring through early autumn is best for visiting Lake Prespa - warm weather and open facilities, with spring/autumn offering quieter nature experiences.
