Lake Plav is a small glacial lake situated immediately adjacent to the town of Plav in northeastern Montenegro. It lies at the foothills of the Prokletije (Accursed) mountain range and is a local scenic and recreational focal point.
The shoreline is popular for short walks, fishing and local leisure activities; trails link the lake to nearby hill viewpoints. The combination of town services and immediate mountain access makes it a convenient starting point for hikes into the surrounding peaks.
The lake formed in a glacial basin and has long been used by local communities for recreation and subsistence fishing. Its role as a local amenity has continued while the surrounding area remains relatively rural.

How to Get to Lake Plav #
Lake Plav sits immediately adjacent to the town of Plav in northeastern Montenegro. The easiest way to reach the lake is to travel to the town of Plav (served by regional/intercity buses from other Montenegrin towns); from the Plav bus station it is a short walk of roughly 1-1.5 km (about 10-20 minutes) along local streets to the lake shore.
Tips for Visiting Lake Plav #
- Go at first light: early morning often brings glassy water and dramatic reflections of the surrounding mountains (the Prokletije/Accursed range), and it's noticeably quieter than later in the day.
- Park in Plav town and follow the short lakeside paths - the main townside access is the most convenient entrance for day visitors and harbors services, while a short walk around the shoreline quickly finds quieter spots.
- Walk or cycle around the less-developed western and northern shores to escape the handful of lakeside cafés and boat-launch crowds; small pebble beaches and viewpoints are easy to discover on foot.
