Lake Pamvotida

Lake Pamvotida is a small freshwater lake in northwestern Greece immediately adjacent to the city of Ioannina in the Epirus region. The lake is the urban lake of Ioannina and is a local recreational and cultural focal point.

The lake contains a small inhabited island with historic churches and traditional houses that attract short boat trips and local tourism. Shore promenades, cafes and walking routes around the city-facing shore make the lake an accessible spot for day visits and short excursions.

Historically the lake and its island have hosted monasteries and settlements; the island retains religious buildings and older residential structures that reflect Byzantine and Ottoman-era occupation. Over time the lake’s role shifted from purely local fishing and transport to include tourism and urban recreation as Ioannina expanded.

Located in the Epirus highlands, the lake sits immediately east of central Ioannina, within a basin surrounded by hills. It is a short drive from regional routes linking Ioannina with other towns in northwestern Greece.
