Lake Ossiach

Lake Ossiach (Ossiacher See) is a lake in the Austrian state of Carinthia, known locally as one of the region’s principal recreational lakes. The shoreline is punctuated by small towns and historic sites that date back to the medieval period.

The lake is a regional recreation destination with boating, swimming and shoreline trails; several villages have public beaches and boat rentals. Local festivals and concerts on the lakeside draw visitors during the summer months.

A Benedictine abbey on the lake shore dates to the medieval period and has been a notable landmark for centuries. Over time the area around the lake developed into a recreational region with tourism infrastructure concentrated in the lakeside villages.

Geographically the lake sits in southern Austria’s Carinthia region near the town of Villach and is surrounded by rolling hills and alpine peaks typical of the area.
