Lake of Gruyère
Lake Swiss reservoir in Gruyères, with lakeside castle
Formed by a dam in Canton Fribourg, the Lake of Gruyère sits below Gruyères village and castle; tourists combine boat trips and shoreline walks with visits to cheese dairies and the medieval town.
The Lake of Gruyère is an artificial reservoir in the Canton of Fribourg formed by damming the Saane/Sarine river; it lies near the historic hill town of Gruyères and has lakeside roads, marinas and picnic areas. The reservoir is a notable local recreational resource and scenic backdrop to the region.
Visitors come for short cruises, lakeside walks and to view a small island with medieval ruins that rises from the water; local roads offer viewpoints and there are picnic and parking facilities at several lakeside stops. The lakeshore is used for leisure and sometimes cycling routes follow the reservoir perimeter.
The reservoir was created in the 20th century when the dam was completed, transforming a river valley into a managed lake and altering the local landscape and access patterns.
Geographically the lake sits in the foothills above the Swiss plateau near Gruyères, within the Canton of Fribourg, and is accessed from nearby towns and regional roads.
- Island ruins: When water levels drop the island ruins and causeway become visible, offering a striking sight and pedestrian access in dry periods; boat trips operate on the reservoir in summer.
What to See #
- Île d'Ogoz: A small island that contains medieval castle ruins and a chapel; the island becomes more prominent and accessible when reservoir levels are low.
- Rossens Dam: The dam and reservoir infrastructure that created the lake; the dam controls water levels on the Sarine/Saane river and formed the present lake in the mid-20th century.
