Lake Neuchâtel
Lake Largest lake entirely within Switzerland
Switzerland’s largest lake entirely within the country, Lake Neuchâtel borders towns like Neuchâtel and Yverdon. Visitors sail, cycle lakeside routes, sample wines from nearby vineyards and stroll waterfront promenades.
Lake Neuchâtel is a major freshwater lake in western Switzerland and the largest lake entirely within Swiss territory. The lake forms an important regional hub for transport, recreation and lakeside towns.
Lakeside towns and promenades, sailing and other non-motorised water sports, and cycle routes along the shore are popular activities. Several towns on the lake offer historic centres, castle sites and spa facilities, making the shoreline a mix of cultural and outdoor attractions.
Towns around the lake have medieval origins and the lake has long supported transport, fishing and agricultural activities in the surrounding lowland. Over time the shoreline settlements developed into regional administrative and market centres.
The lake lies in western Switzerland, bordered by the cantons of Neuchâtel, Vaud, Fribourg and Bern, with the city of Neuchâtel on its northwestern shore.
