Lake Nemi

Lake Nemi is a small circular volcanic lake in the Alban Hills (Colli Albani) of Lazio, Italy, near the town of Nemi. It is a shallow volcanic basin known for its compact size and historical associations dating back to Roman times.

The lake is best known for the discovery of large Roman barges-often linked to Emperor Caligula-that were salvaged from the lake in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Artifacts and information from those vessels have been exhibited locally and are central to the site’s archaeological interest.

The Roman barges were discovered and excavated in the early 20th century and became important examples of Roman naval engineering and ceremonial architecture; they have shaped the lake’s cultural significance and local museum collections.
