Lake Martignano
Lake Volcanic lake north of Rome popular for leisure
Northwest of Rome, Lake Martignano occupies a volcanic crater rim. Romans and day‑trippers come for swimming, sailing and lakeside restaurants as a quieter alternative to busier nearby lakes.
Lake Martignano is a small volcanic crater lake in Lazio, Italy, northwest of Rome and part of the Sabatini volcanic complex. It forms one of the two lakes in the Bracciano-Martignano regional park and is valued for its clear water and natural setting.
The shoreline is mostly undeveloped and offers beaches and shallow coves used for swimming, canoeing and picnics; the lake is considerably smaller than nearby Lago di Bracciano. There are walking trails and viewpoints on the surrounding hills that provide views across the water and the adjacent pine and oak woodlands.
The lake occupies a volcanic collapse crater formed by activity in the Sabatini volcanic district. The area has been used for recreation since the 20th century and is managed within the regional park to protect water quality and landscape character.
Lake Martignano sits northwest of the city of Rome and just north of the town of Bracciano, within the comune boundaries near Anguillara Sabazia. The landscape around the lake is hilly and wooded, with the larger town of Bracciano and its railway connection serving as the closest transport hub.
- Protected area: Sits inside the Parco Regionale di Bracciano-Martignano, which protects the lake and surrounding hills and limits development around the shore.
- Recreation tips: Good for swimming and small non-motorised boating in summer; access points are limited and many shore sections are steep, so bring suitable footwear.

By car: roughly 30-45 minutes north of Rome via the SP2/SS2 routes; parking available at designated areas. Public transit: regional buses from Saxa Rubra or local towns; final approach often requires a short taxi.
