Lake Kerkini is an artificial reservoir on the Strymon (Struma) River in Central Macedonia, northern Greece, created in the 20th century to regulate river flows and support irrigation. It lies near the town of Kerkini and the city of Serres.
The reservoir and surrounding wetlands are internationally important for waterbirds and wetland biodiversity, attracting large numbers of migrating and wintering species and making the area a major site for birdwatchers and naturalists.
The lake was formed by damming the river in the 20th century and has subsequently been managed to maintain wetland habitats; water levels and agricultural uses have shaped its modern ecology.
Lake Kerkini sits in the Serres regional unit of Central Macedonia, close to the border with Bulgaria and within easy driving distance of the city of Serres.

How to Get to Lake Kerkini #
From Serres, take the EO62/EO12 northwest towards the villages of Kerkini and Lithotopi; the lake is about 40-45 minutes by car from Serres. Regional buses run to the nearest villages; to reach specific hides and boat launches it’s easiest to hire a local guide or taxi.
