Lake Karla

Lake Karla is a shallow lake and wetland area in the Thessaly region of central Greece that was largely drained in the mid-20th century. In the 21st century the site has been the focus of a major ecological restoration project to re-establish wetland habitat and partial reflooding.

Since restoration work began, parts of the former lake bed have been refilled and managed as reedbeds and shallow wetland, providing habitat for waterbirds and other wetland species. Recreational and visitor facilities, including paths and observation points, have been added in some restored zones.

Historically the lake covered a significant area of the Thessalian plain before drainage for agriculture in the 1960s. The recent restoration effort aims to balance ecological recovery with local water management and land-use needs.

The site lies in central Thessaly, in the lowland plain of the region, located inland from the Pagasitic Gulf and within driving distance of regional towns and the city of Volos.
