Lake Izvorul Muntelui, commonly known as Lake Bicaz, is a reservoir on the Bistrița River in northeastern Romania created by damming the river. It is the country’s largest artificial lake by capacity and serves hydroelectric, flood-control and recreational functions.
The reservoir supports boating and shoreline recreation and is flanked by roads that link the towns of Bicaz and surrounding villages. The lake is used for fisheries as well as tourism activities tied to the nearby Ceahlău Mountains.
The reservoir was created in the mid-20th century with construction of a large dam on the Bistrița River; the project formed the lake and altered local river flow for energy and water management purposes. Since its creation the lake has been an important regional infrastructure asset as well as a tourist destination.
Geographically the lake sits in northeastern Romania near the town of Bicaz and at the foot of the Ceahlău massif, with mountain scenery on one side and reservoir shoreline on the other.
