Lake Hume is a large reservoir on the Murray River near the Albury-Wodonga region on the New South Wales-Victoria border. The reservoir was formed by the construction of Hume Dam, completed in the 1930s, and is an important water storage within the Murray system.

The lake stores roughly 3,000 gigalitres at full supply and is used for irrigation, water supply and flood regulation across the Murray-Darling basin. Extensive shoreline facilities support boating, water-skiing, fishing and camping, with public boat ramps and caravan parks around the reservoir.

Hume Dam was built during the 1920s-1930s as part of an intergovernmental effort to regulate the Murray River and provide reliable irrigation water. The dam and reservoir have since been subject to upgrades and operational changes to meet evolving water management needs.

The reservoir lies upstream of the twin cities of Albury (NSW) and Wodonga (VIC), on the Murray River across the state border; it is accessed from the Hume Highway and nearby regional towns.

  • Storage and purpose: Stores roughly three thousand gigalitres of water at full capacity and functions for irrigation, flood mitigation and surface water supply in the Murray-Darling basin.
  • Recreation: Popular for boating, water-skiing and fishing with multiple public boat ramps and caravan parks along the shorelines.
